Beeswax, soy and paraffin: the difference starts at the source

Beeswax is made by honeybees. Bees produce wax to build the intricate comb that holds honey and nurtures their colony. Once collected, the wax is cleaned and filtered for use. That extraordinary origin is part of what makes beeswax worth choosing; discover the story in Inside the Hive.

Soy wax is made from processed soybean oil. Hydrogenation turns the oil into a solid wax. A candle labeled “soy” may also contain other waxes. We choose beeswax for its natural character and the connection to the hive, and we do not dilute our candle wax with soy.

Paraffin is petroleum-derived. We prefer a wax made by bees to one produced through petroleum refining. That is a firm material preference behind every beeswax candle we make, not a detail we hide in the small print. The National Candle Association's wax overview explains these different origins.

Our yellow beeswax has a gentle, natural honey-like aroma. It comes from the wax itself, with subtle variations between batches. Expect a delicate scent close to the candle, not an overpowering perfume that takes over the room.

Our white beeswax has next to no scent. It is an excellent choice when you want candlelight alongside dinner, flowers and conversation, with virtually no wax aroma. Neither color contains added fragrance, dyes, soy or paraffin.

Questions we hear about beeswax

Why choose beeswax instead of soy or paraffin?

We choose beeswax for its bee-made origin, natural beauty and distinctive character. Our candles contain no petroleum-derived paraffin, no soy blends, no added fragrance and no dyes. If those qualities matter to you, our 100% beeswax collection is made with that same preference in mind.

Are your beeswax candles scented?

We do not add fragrance. Our yellow beeswax has its own gentle honey-like aroma; our white beeswax has next to no scent. Both give you the beauty of pure beeswax without added perfume.

What about beeswax, negative ions and airborne particles?

Negative ions can attach to airborne particles, causing them to collect on surfaces or on a collector. That is a real process described by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that burning a beeswax candle produces enough ions to meaningfully clean a room's air. We choose and recommend beeswax for the qualities we can stand behind: its pure material, natural character, craftsmanship and beautiful candlelight.

Are your candles a beeswax blend?

No. The wax in our handcrafted beeswax candles is 100% beeswax. We do not stretch it with soy or petroleum-derived paraffin.
